A Pharmacy or Dispensary Assistant provides medication according to prescriptions supplied in a community or hospital pharmacy. A Pharmacy Assistant ensures that medication is accurately labelled with the drug name, strength, quantity and directions for use. They also keep an eye on stock levels and the expiry dates on medical products.
There are also administrative duties required, including recording all customer details and ensuring the stock inventory is up-to-date. Expired or defective medication must be safely disposed of. A Pharmacy Assistant may also be responsible for ordering stationary that complies with the National Health Service guidelines. They receive payment for products or services and must be confident in cash handling and operating an EFTPOS system.
Excellent communication skills are required as the discussion of sensitive medical concerns, products or services requires discretion and clarity.
